Marriage & Civil Union Licenses

Couples getting married in the state of New Jersey must apply for a marriage/civil union license at least 72 hours before the intended wedding/arrangement date.

  • ~  Either applicant resides in Plainsboro and the ceremony will take place in New Jersey
  • ~  Applicants reside outside of New Jersey, but the ceremony is taking place in Plainsboro

NOTEIn order to schedule an appointment, you need to know when and where your ceremony will take place as well as who will be the officiant


Couples must bring the following to the date of the appointment:

  • Driver's license showing current address
    • NOTE: If neither identification displays the current address in Plainsboro Township, please have one of the items below ready to present physically or through the phone.
      • Utility Bill
      • Lease Agreement
      • Bank Statement 
  • A witness who is 18 years of age or older
  • A completed Marriage / Civil Union Application
    • Do NOT sign the application as it must be signed under oath, in the presence of the issuing authority.
  • $28.00 fee payable by cash or money order


Additional information regarding the process:
  • The applicants and one witness must appear together when applying for the license. 
    • If both applicants cannot appear at the same time, each applicant may come separately with the same witness. 
  • Applicants who are U.S. citizens are required by law to provide their social security numbers on the back of the application. 
    • This information will be kept confidential. 
  • The marriage APPLICATION is valid for six (6) months from the date filed, unless the Registrar has given prior approval to extend the validity of the application to a maximum of one year.
  • The marriage LICENSE, once issued and picked up, is valid for thirty (30) days.


Filling out the license:
  • Print legibly
  • Complete fields 3 through 7c
    • NOTE: Erasures, cross-outs, white-outs, abbreviations, or incomplete licenses will not be accepted by the State Department of Vital Statistics
  • Field 3 should be filled out with the municipality and county where the ceremony took place, NOT the address of the venue!
    • NOTE: If the ceremony took place in either of the following venues, the municipality and county would be Plainsboro, Middlesex:
      • Princeton Marriott at Forrestal
      • Westin Princeton at Forrestal Village
      • Homewood Suites by Hilton Princeton
      • Courtyard by Marriott Princeton

If you are unsure whether or not the ceremony venue is within Plainsboro city limits, contact our office and provide us with the street name to better assist you. 

  • "Officiant" is not a valid title for field 5c. Applicable titles in the State of New Jersey are as follows:

Dropping off the license: 

  • State Law requires that copy 1 and copy 2 of the marriage/civil union license be returned to the Registrar of the municipality where the ceremony was performed within five (5) days after the ceremony was performed

    • If the ceremony took place in Plainsboro, a request for a certified copy of the marriage certificate can be submitted after the ceremony for a fee of $15.00 per copy

    • If the ceremony took place in any other municipality, contact their Registrar’s Office for information on requesting a certified copy of the marriage certificate
